Protective collars also known as E Collars, Recovery cones, Elizabethan collars, protective collars, are an essential tool for a recovering dog.
Why are they important and how do they help your pet recover?
The collar creates a barrier between the point of injury/ surgery and the pets ability to tear apart a dressing, stitches or pull out a IV.
Most pets will rebel against the collar, if you know your pet is to undergo a surgery, get them used to the collar before the procedure.
Make sure you measure your dog for a collar that fits comfortably. When using the collar a safe rule of thumb to make sure the collar fits comfortably you should be able to insert two fingers between the collar and the dogs neck.

How to Measure for an Elizabethan Collar
Measure the length from your dogs neck to the tip of its nose, make sure you measure till the tip of the nose. The collar will not be effective if your dog can reach outside the collar.
Next, measure the circumference of your dogs neck & choose appropriate collar size.
How do I introduce the collar to my dog?
It is advisable not to wait until the day of surgery to introduce the collar to your dog. If the surgery or procedure is planned you have the time to gently acquaint your pet with the collar. Maybe place the collar on them for a short while and take it off. Let them know it is their ‘friend. On the day of surgery and post surgery your pet as well as you are stressed, we don’t want the collar to be an additional source of stress!
Note: All Collars are adjustable to 1-2 inches of measurements mentioned in the chart.
