Cats are hunters, climbers and chasers. We’ve confined them to apartments and houses. Declawing cats was a common practice until a number of countries and cat owners have come to realise de clawing is an unnecessary and cruel practice. Cats are hunters and in a natural setting rely on their claws to trap and kill prey, therefore, they sharpen their claws.
Placed in a home, cats have no access to trees of rough surfaces to sharpen their claws and often turn to furniture.  If you are multi cat household, get one scratching post for each cat.
