Antimicrobial Resistance should be a part of our vocabulary and on every school syllabus!

World Zoonoses day, not just another day to commemorate. Zoonoses is doubtless one of the most important subjects for students, consumers, citizens- people anywhere and everywhere to understand. It takes on a new significance as wave after wave of Covid bring your local neighbourhood and the world to a halt.

World Zoonoses Day commemorates the first successful vaccine administered against rabies by Louie Pasteur in 1885. That vaccine changed the course of history and human- animal interaction. Zoonotic diseases have been present for thousands of years. The term zoonotic means the disease originates in an animal species and jumps to a human species. Simply put there are a couple of ways humans can contract disease from animals one is by invading their habitats. The other is by creating the perfect kitchen to cook, mix and help diseases jump- i.e factory farms.

If your educational institution, is not bringing awareness to zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance and climate change, ask them why? It would be a betrayal of the trust we place in educational institutions and educators if this topic continues to be ignored.
