The Grey Hound is one of the oldest breed of dogs with evidence dating back to the Pharohs. In ancient Egypt, greyhounds were revered as divine- gods. The breed in ancient Greece was used to chase hare and with the spread of the empire the Greyhound was brought to England.

Their physical agility meant the dog was perfect for coursing (chasing hares) in hunting. The greyhound is a dignified dog, with their fine features and quiet demeanour. 

Grey Hounds in the Modern World

Around the 1800's race tracks for coursing were introduced and Grey Hound which laid the foundation  of grey hound racing. Unfortunately this was the beginning of gambling and an industry which exploited and continues to exploit this gentle breed. 

Hundreds of grey hounds are discarded once they are no longer fit for racing, or profit. There are numerous organisations working toward the rescue and rehabilitation of ex racing grey hounds. If you are considering adopting a dog, speak to a rescue center near you.

• These dogs are intelligent, gentle, and calm.

• Most greys get along well with another grey hound.

• They have a natural prey drive so it is important to be vigilant when out on walks

It is important to remember that they have a life span of 12-15 years. They are short coated. Because of their thin frame and almost zero body fat, the breed has little protection against cuts and bruises.
